I miss being a kid, no fear, no flab, nothing in the way on the mountain. Watching Sunny Steele snowboard makes me think what could have happened if I was on a snowboard much much younger and maintained a healthy lifestyle and chose mountain jobs instead of career jobs and had talent haha. When he was about 9yrs old Sunny was a passionate mini skater and at that age his sister (Lily Steele) was 7yrs old, a passionate grom surfer. They both tried snowboarding and after a few days were already on black runs. Sunny won a jumper in a comp and that was it – he became hooked like the rest of us, just with more talent.
14yr old Sunny Steele has a weakness for Maltesers and Nutella, nevertheless, his supportive parents have been nurturing his strengths in boardsports. Sunny loves surfing and skateboarding, however, snowboarding is his true passion. This past season Sunny and his dad travelled to the United States to stack footage in the streets and backcountry, and to train with Mikey Williams Snow. They started off filming in Lake Tahoe and concluded the trip training and competing in Colorado.
Sunny has been clocking up greats results in Australia and abroad, including 1st overall at the New Zealand Nationals and Thredbo Snow Series. He is a well-rounded rider beyond his years, stepping outside of slopestyle and taking his skills into the streets and backcountry. He has dreams of being a professional snowboarder and competing at the X Games and Olympic Games. This season Sunny has been offered a scholarship with Ski and Snowboard Australia.
We cannot wait to see Sunny flourish and take on the world stage as he develops. All the best grom!
